Derrick Mount joined the South Alabama staff leading into the 2024 season. He returned to his alma mater in July 2022, joining Matt Riser’s staff at Southeastern Louisiana University as assistant coach and camp coordinator for one season before taking the assistant coaching job in Mobile.
Mount spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, Mississippi. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach at D’Iberville (Mississippi) High School for three years.
A native of Saucier, MS, Mount is a 2013 graduate of Harrison Central High School. As a senior pitcher/infielder, he helped the Red Rebels to a MHSAA 6A South State championship. He hit .511-with 11 doubles, two triples and one home run, driving in 20 and scoring 46 runs. On the mound, he compiled a 5-1 record with a 0.90 ERA while striking out 60 batters in 39 innings of work. He was also a team captain as both a junior and senior. At the completion of his final campaign, he was named 1st Team All-State and Coast Player of the Year and was named to the Coast All-Star and Crossroads All-Star teams. He was team captain as a junior and senior.
Mount next spent two years at Pearl River Community College where he was again a pitcher/infielder. He hit .345, with a .435 on-base percentage, 12 doubles and two triples as a freshman, driving in 32 runs and scoring 32 more. He also stole 16 bases. A team captain as a sophomore, he was an All-Region selection. He batted .368 with 12 homers, 40 runs scored, 41 runs batted in and 19 steals. On the mound, pitched 24 innings while turning in a 1-3 record with a pair of saves.
Mount finished his collegiate career at Southeastern. During the 2016 season he played in 40 games, starting 35. At the plate, Mount produced eight doubles, three homers, 21 runs batted in, 19 runs scored and five stolen bases. He had eight multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games. In limited action on the mound, he held opponents to a .184 batting average while turning in a 1-1 record with a pair of saves. He recorded his first NCAA save in a 4-2 win over Southern Miss, starting a team-record 14-game winning streak. He was the winning pitcher in the Lions’ 7-6 victory over No. 25-ranked Tulane. As a senior, Mount hit .301 with eight doubles, two triples, five homers, 38 runs batted in, 40 runs scored and 23 walks.
Mount graduated from SLU in the spring of 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in general studies.
