USA WOMEN?S TENNIS SWEPT 7-0 BY NO. 73 VIRGINIA TECH
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team fell to No. 73 Virginia Tech 7-0 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center Sunday.
"This was a severe gut check and test of character for us," USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. "We out in a good effort, but, unfortunately, our quality of play remains rather poor. It is extremely frustrating watching us play with such a severe lack of self belief. We will have to dig in and work harder in order to overcome this culture of mediocre performance."
At No. 2 doubles Marie Boura and Jess Courtnell fell to the Hokies’ Yasmin Hamza and Holly Johnson 8-3. USA’s Katie Welch and Chané Hines followed with an 8-5 loss to Shannon Betts and Christin Newman on the No. 1 court.
In singles competition Courtnell dropped a quick match to Hamza 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 flight to clinch the match for the Hokies. Boura then fell at No. 2 to Newman 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 1 spot Welch battled with Martha Blakely, but was edged 7-5, 7-5.
Virginia tech earned wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots by default.
The Jaguars will return home March 10 to host Austin Peay at 2 p.m. at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts. Admission is free.
