As a student-athlete at University of South Alabama, you are subject to many rules and regulations, which if not followed could jeopardize your ability to compete in intercollegiate athletics.  Below, please find information organized into various categories that should provide you with assistance in understanding what is permissible under NCAA rules.

Progress Toward Degree Requirements

Playing and Practice Season Limitations – During the playing season, a student-athlete’s participation in countable athletically related activities shall be limited to a maximum of four hours per day and 20 hours per week.  In addition, the NCAA requires that student-athletes be given at least one day off per week during the playing season. 

Outside of the playing season (during the academic year), a student-athlete’s participation in countable athletically related activities shall be limited to a maximum of 8 hours per week of weights, conditioning and skill instruction (no more than 2 hours).  In addition, the NCAA requires that student-athletes be given at least two days off per week outside of the playing season.

Extra Benefits – The NCAA defines an extra benefit as any special arrangement by an institution employee or a representative of the institution’s athletic interest (“booster”) to provide a student-athlete, or a student-athlete’s parent(s) or legal guardian(s), a benefit that is not generally available to other University of South Alabama students and their relatives, or is not expressly authorized by the NCAA legislation.
