MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama football worked out for about two hours Thursday afternoon at the on-campus practice fields. USA will take the weekend off, then return to the field to begin game week for the Jags' showdown with Army Prep on Sept. 26.
"We had a continuation of what we've worked on all week long," head coach Joey Jones said. "We worked on different situations and really worked hard against their offense, defense and special teams. Thursdays are always a comprehensive practice, and then we got to work our young guys in a scrimmage at the end."
While the Jags went into the first game unsure of what their opponent would do, the coaches won't have to do as much adjusting this time around because they've had the opportunity to study game film from the current season.
"This is a little different, more precise game plan," Jones said. "The last game plan was a little more comprehensive where we went into the game, watched what they were doing and then selected plays. This one can be a little more targeted."
Most of the attention has gone to the triple-option offense Army Prep will run, but the offense has spent time working against the scout team defense to be prepared for what it will see come game day.
"They're running a little bit of a different defense called a flex," Jones said. "They do a good job with it, and it's just a little bit different front, so we're trying to make some adjustments there. It definitely helps having watched some film."
Even with three weeks between games, Jones said the coaches aren't having any trouble finding things to work on.
"I feel better, but we've got a lot of work to do to get ready for the option style of offense," Jones said. "We understand that it takes our kids time to do that, but I felt like it was a good start and we'll just have to continue that next week. We broke down the fundamentals of special teams this week, and now we'll have to put it back together for next week."
