LADY JAGS TENNIS BREEZES PAST WINTHROP

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team swept doubles and won the top four singles flights in a 6-1 victory over Winthrop Sunday at Memorial Courts.

The win is the No. 73 Jaguars’ sixth straight ? five by a 6-1 margin ? and puts their overall record at 9-3. The Eagles fall to 9-8.

At No. 1 doubles, USA seniors Sylvanie Spangenberg (Pretoria, South Africa) and Michaela Babicova (Piestany, Slovakia), ranked No. 47 in the nation, edged Winthrop’s Patricia Coimbra/Elizaveta Zaytseva 8-6. The Jaguars took the win at the other two flights 8-3.

South Alabama needed three sets to claim victories at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. Sophomore Erica Krisan (Marietta, Ga.) defeated Zaytseva 7-5, 4-6, (10-7) and Babicova rallied to outlast Coimbra 0-6, 6-0, 6-1.

Lisa Wilkinson topped Spangenberg 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 to account for Winthrop’s lone point.

The Jaguars return to the court April 5 when they take on Louisiana-Lafayette at 10 a.m.
