MOBILE, Ala.? The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team defeated Southern Mississippi 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
“We started a little soft in doubles today,” head coach Nick Brochu said, “but we were able to come back and dominate in singles. Winning all of our matches in straight sets was crucial today.”
The 74th-ranked Jaguars started slow, losing the first doubles match at the No. 2 position. Sergio Ramirez and Leo Dominguez kept the Jaguars in the running for the doubles point with their 8-2 victory over USM’s Andrew Poole and Jan Burmeister, but South Alabama fell on court three 8-5.
USA dominated in singles action, winning all six matches in straight sets.
Romain Bocaert set the pace for singles play by picking up a quick win at the No. 3 position. Bocaert defeated Southern Mississippi’s Domagoi Anic 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman Hanno Bartsch clinched the victory for the Jaguars with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Strate Kkrstevski on the No. 5 court.
Ramirez, ranked No. 66 in the nation, improved to 7-0 on the season in singles play, defeating Andrew Poole 6-3, 6-2.
Marek Sramek, Dominguez, and Dauw Kruger also picked up wins for South Alabama.
The Jags hit the road on Thursday to take on Sun Belt Conference foe Troy at 2 p.m.
