MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama added to its first-ever signing class not just by receiving four more National Letters-of-Intent since signing day, but with the talent of the quartet.
Jaguar head coach Joey Jones announced Tuesday that four more in-state recruits will join the program, highlighted by the highest ranked player among the school’s 35 incoming freshmen.
“We found some guys late in the recruiting process who I think are going to make this class much better,” said Jones. “Sometimes your best guys are the ones you find late, and these are individuals who are going to add a lot to the program when they arrive. And, they’re going to help at multiple positions.”
Darrius McMullin, a 6-foot-2, 280-pound defensive lineman from Hoover was ranked 33rd nationally among defensive tackles by Scouts, Inc., as the organization rated him as the 21st-best player in Alabama and fifth in the state at his position. The Spain Park High School product played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic after recording 50 tackles including three sacks in his final high-school season. McMullin was also 12th on the Birmingham News’ list of the top 24 recruits in Alabama.
He’s the fourth member of this year’s recruiting class to be ranked at his position nationally by Scouts, Inc.
Keairon Wilson (pronounced key-RON) is the fourth Mobilian to join the program in the last week, coming from Davidson HS where he helped lead the Warriors to an 11-3 finish and a berth in the semifinals of the state 6A playoffs. A 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back, he was selected first-team all-region as a senior after posting 90 stops while also intercepting five passes, as he would go on to take part in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic as well.
A 6-foot-1, 195-pound linebacker from Anniston, Mytez Madden earned honorable mention all-state and first-team all-county honors in the fall after helping lead Saks High to the state 4A playoffs. As a junior, Madden was voted honorable mention all-state while also being named to the Anniston Star’s Dandy Dozen after being credited with 118 total tackles ? that included 23 behind the line of scrimmage.
Mardavian Martin, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound native of Millbrook, rounds out the class. A first-team all-county and all-metro choice as a senior after helping Stanhope Elmore HS to a 7-4 record and a berth in the state 6A playoffs, Martin scored 26 touchdowns in his three-year career with the Mustangs. That included 10 scores (eight came via the rush with a pair on catches) a year ago as he ran for 427 yards and added 375 receiving yards on the season.
USA’s first-ever recruiting class is comprised of a total of 47 players, including a dozen who have already enrolled in school.
