WOMEN?S GOLF ALONE IN SECOND PLACE

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. ? Yesterday they played the back nine great and today they torched the front nine as the University of South Alabama women’s golf team sits alone in second place after carding 305 at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, Tuesday. The Lady Jags top-four golfers shot a combined five-over par on the front nine of the RTJ Schoolmaster Course and all four are in the top-20 on the individual leaderboard. Denver (584) is still the team leader with a 26-stroke lead, while Stephanie Sherlock is the individual leader at one-under par 143.

“I think this is the most focused we have been off all year and it is paying off,” head coach T.J. Jackson said. “This is a tough course and as they get in trouble we are getting out of it so we need to keep it up.”

Elin Andersson continued her strong play with a one-over par 73 and two-day score of 147. She is in third place with 18 holes left to play and only four strokes back of the leader. Sara Marti played the front nine two-over par and finished with a 77, while Nina Offenberg also turned in a 77. Offenberg turned in a front nine score of one-under par. Shirley Harvey (78) turned in a front of 39 and is tied for tenth place with 152. Darah Newell is 52nd overall with a 171.

Behind the Pioneers and USA, Middle Tennessee is third with 613 and all three will play together in the final pairing, Wednesday. UALR (614) and Florida International (616) are in fourth and fifth, respectively

“We are striking the ball well so we are giving our selves some birdie opportunities, but we still have to focus one more day and not get ahead of ourselves,” Jackson noted.

The final round of the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship continues with the Lady Jags in the final pairing, Wednesday. Final tournament results can be accessed at usajaguars.com and live scoring is available at sunbeltsports.org.
