BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. ? Ana Garcia shot her best round of the season to lead the South Alabama women’s golf team to a tie for fourth place Tuesday at the 2008 L.D.R. Investments/Lady Colonel Collegiate in Bay St. Louis.
Garcia’s final-round 71 was followed by Nina Offenberg’s 75. Offenberg finished the tournament with a two-round total of 154 that placed her in a tie for 13th place individually. She was joined by fellow Jag Shirley Harvey, who shot a final-round 79 to also finish at 154.
Claudia Wolf’s 81 gave the Jags a 306 final-round total, the third-best team score of the day. Combined with Monday’s 315, USA finished at 621, 24 strokes behind tournament champion McNeese State.
“There are a lot of positives coming out of this, especially with Ana’s 71 and Nina’s 75,” head coach T.J. Jackson said. “They made vast improvements to shoot the scores that they did, and that’s what we’ve been looking for - we just need to maintain that, and we need others to follow. That’s when we’ll be right where we want to be.”
Freshman Anna Sellen-Runefjell, competing as an individual in her first collegiate tournament, shot a final-round 80 to give her a 161 tournament total. Sellen-Runefjell finished tied for 32nd place, but she was third among the nine golfers competing only as individuals. Additionally, Garcia finished the tournament in a tie for 17th at 156.
USA returns to action Monday when it heads to Huntsville, Ala. to compete in the fourth-annual Troy University Women’s Invitational at Arrowhead Country Club.
