USA?S MARTI QUALIFIES FOR SOUTHERN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of South Alabama senior-to-be women’s golfer Sara Marti qualified earlier this week to compete in the Women’s Golf Association Southern Amateur Championship held at Riverchase Country Club.
“For Sara to qualify for a prestigious event like the Southern Amateur is a huge accomplishment,” said head coach T.J. Jackson. “This shows that she is doing the rights things with her golf game and continuing to develop her game during the off-season. Playing in tournaments like this will only help her have success next year.”
In the qualifying round, Marti fired a two-under par 70, finishing tied for second place behind 2007 NCAA Individual Champion Stacey Lewis of Arkansas. In the first round of head-to-head play, Marti was matched against Alabama golfer Sarah Sturm, but dropped the match two to one. Marti was then knocked out of the tournament by Abigale Schepperle of Auburn five to four in the consolation round.
A native of Houston, Texas, Marti led the Lady Jags with a 75.32 strokes per round average this past season. She also helped USA to one of the strongest seasons in women’s golf history, winning five team tournaments. Marti’s best finish was second place at the 5th Annual Samford Intercollegiate held March 19-20.
