LAREDO, Texas – The University of South Alabama men’s golf team finished the final round of the Border Olympics in eighth place at Laredo Country Club Saturday. The Jags carded 289 on the final round for a 54-hole score of 869. Lamar swept the awards shooting 29-under par 835 as a team, while Justin Harding was the medalist with 206.
South Alabama was led by junior Jonny Caldwell who recorded a three-under par 69. Sophomore Daniel Burns shot even-par 72, fellow sophomore Kyle Simmons carded 74 and freshman Marc-Ettiene Bussieres also turned in a two-over par 74. Sophomore Dan Swomley recorded a 79 to round out the Jag’s scoring.
“We played pretty solid, but we still have some work before our home tournament next week,” said men’s coach Ben Hannan. “We didn’t have anybody with a spectacular tournament, but we played just solid golf.”
Behind Lamar in second was Baylor recording a 10-under par 854. Vanderbilt shot 858, UT-Arlington carded 859, while Houston finished in fifth with 863.
“Lamar has a legitimate chance to win the national championship and we got a good look to see where we are on the national scene as this tournament,” said Hannan.
Three golfers finished tied in second place recording eight-under par 208, including Vanderbilt golfer Luke List who shot a six-under par 66 Saturday. Cole Isban of Notre Dame came in fifth with seven-under par 209.
South Alabama returns to action March 26-27 for the 2007 USA Spring Classic at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile.
