USA IN THIRD PLACE AT CARTER PLANTATION INTERCOLLEGIATE

HAMMOND, La. – The University of South Alabama men’s golf team fired rounds of 295 and 289 after 36 holes at the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate Monday. The Jags are currently in third place with 18 holes left to play. Host Southeastern Louisiana holds the team lead after carding rounds of 285 and 286. Three golfers are tied for first, recording a two-round score of 141.

Freshman Marc-Etienne Bussieres led USA notching a three-under par 69, while sophomore Daniel Burns shot a one-over par 71. Junior Jonny Caldwell recorded a two-over par 74 and sophomore Kyle Simmons carded 79. Sophomore Dan Swomley carded 81 to round out the Jaguar scoring.

In the afternoon session, Caldwell played through windy conditions to shot four-under par 68. Burns shot a one-under par 71 and Simmons carded two-over par 74. Bussieres followed up his 68 with a four-over par 76, while Swomley recorded 84.

“I am proud of the way the guys played, some of them struggled this morning, but they closed out the last round extremely well,” said coach Ben Hannan. “Tonight we are going to sit down and stress all five golfers contributing and continue playing their game.”

Behind the leader, is Sun Belt conference foe Middle Tennessee recording rounds of 293 and 289. USA is three strokes behind, while Jacksonville State is in fourth scoring 592. Louisiana-Tech and Tennessee-Chattanooga are tied for fifth carding 593.

Daniel Willett from Jacksonville State, Peter O’Keefe of Southeastern Louisiana and Middle Tennessee golfer Kent Bull are the three golfers in the lead with 141. Caldwell and Derek Rende from UT-Chattanooga are tied in fourth carding 142.

“Tomorrow we need to a play a game of patience and par, while taking advantage of the few birdie opportunities,” said Hannan.
