SOUTH ALABAMA MEN?S TENNIS HAS TWO RANKED ON LATEST ITA SOUTHEAST REGION POLL

MOBILE, Ala. ? South Alabama men’s tennis players Jack Baker and Marek Sramek each received a ranking in the ITA Southeast Region Poll earlier this month after their play during the fall season.

In the latest ITA Southeast Regional rankings, Baker comes in ranked ninth in singles play.  This past fall, the Jag senior posted an 8-4 singles record, while recording six victories over ranked opponents.  Baker’s best win of the fall campaign came at the 2007 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., when he defeated then 12th-ranked Adam Holmstrom of Denver in straight sets in the Round of 16.  Baker advanced all the way to the quarterfinal round of the All-American tournament and earned an automatic bid to the ITA National Indoor Championships this past November.

"Jack totally deserves this great ranking,” South Alabama men’s tennis head coach Nick Brochu said.  “He had a great fall and an amazing All-American tournament.  Jack and Marek played extremely well this semester knowing it was their first time together.  I am very proud of both of them.  It is very hard to be ranked in our region since it is probably the toughest in the country."

Baker and Sramek, ranked 11th in the South Region in doubles action, also had a strong fall season with the duo going 5-1 with three wins over nationally ranked opponents.  The duos’ lone loss came in the Round of 16 to Virginia’s top-ranked team of Treat Huey/Somdev Devvarman at the All-American Championship in Tulsa.
