"The Jungle"
USA Mitchell Center
A dream was realized in 1999 with the opening of the 10,000-seat Mitchell Center Arena, giving the Jaguar basketball teams a state-of-the-art, on-campus facility. The arena has come to be known as "The Jungle".
In 2001, South Alabama and the Mitchell Center played host to the first-ever combined Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament. Each December, the Jaguar men’s basketball team and the GMAC Mobile Alabama Bowl play host to the annual Coors Classic Basketball Tournament that has attracted such teams as Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Louisville to the Port City.
In 10 seasons of play at the Mitchell Center, the Jaguar men are 108-40 while USA’s women are 94-46. Prior to the opening of the Mitchell Center, Jaguar teams played their home games at both the Mobile Civic Center and Jaguar Gym.
The building also houses offices for the USA Athletic Department and men's and women's basketball teams.
Outside of South Alabama athletics, the Mitchell Center has served as a multi-purpose facility hosting events ranging from concerts to commencement ceremonies and other large events.
