GOWEN NAMED ALTERNATE TO U.S. AMATEUR
MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama men’s golfer Greg Gowen has been named first alternate for the U.S. Amateur Tournament. The U.S. Amateur will be played Aug. 21-27 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. Gowen, a red-shirt sophomore from Oxford, Miss., played last week at the U.S. Amateur Qualifying Tournament held in Memphis, Tenn., at the Memphis Colonial Country Club. Gowen finished tied for second out of a field of 60 golfers.
Gowen carded rounds of 67 and 70 to finish at five-under-par. In a three person playoff for the second spot to the U.S. Amateur, Gowen placed second to receive the first alternate position.
“We are very, very happy for Greg, who is starting to play consistent golf,” said South Alabama men’s golf head coach Ben Hannan, “We hope he can have a huge impact for the team this fall.”
Gowen sat out the 2005-2006 season after playing in all 34 rounds as a freshman. His best finish was T-19th at the LSU Spring Invitational, while shooting a season-low round of 70 at the Tulane Invitational.
