MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama men’s golfer Jonny Caldwell was named to the Northern Ireland Amateur National Team earlier this week. Caldwell, a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, will compete in the European Championship in Biella, Italy, Aug. 23-26, for his native country. Caldwell has been ranked as high as number two this summer in Northern Ireland Amateur rankings.
“Jonny has continued his strong play from the end of last season into this summer,” said South Alabama Men’s Golf head coach Ben Hannan, “He has grown into a big time nationally recognized player and it will be a huge step to play at another internationally recognized tournament.”
Earlier this summer, Caldwell placed eighth in the Irish Amateur Open Championship, held July 9-12 at Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin, Ireland. Caldwell shot a 69 on the first day of play to take the lead, but shot rounds of 73, 77, and 78 to finish the tournament in eighth place.
Caldwell finished out the 2006 season leading the Jaguars to a second place finish at the Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Tournament. For the tournament, he shot four-under-par to finish second overall as an individual. Caldwell was also named to the all-conference team for the third straight year.
