WOMEN FALL TO NO. 5 SEED TROY IN CONSOLATION MATCH OF SBC TOURNEY

- The University of South Alabama women's tennis team
dropped a 4-3 decision to Troy Sunday morning in the consolation
match of the 2006 Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Championships
held at the Mobile Tennis Center.
The Lady Jags
(15-10) opened doubles play by quickly taking No. 3 with an 8-1
win by Dijana Stanic and Michaela Babicova over Caroline Jouanin
and Suzanne Jones, but went on to drop the final two spots. Troy's
Rawia Elsisi and Annabelle Bares defeated USA's duo of Maria Zivcicova/Sylvanie
Spanenberg, 8-3 at No. 2 and then the No. 52 ranked team of Tsitsi
Masviba/Claudia Strauss outlasted South Alabama's team of Adrianna
Solarova/Klara Jarova, 8-6.
In singles,
Spanenberg evened the match back up at 1-1 with a straight set victory
(6-4, 6-2) at No. 6 over Shamiaa Elsisi. Troy's R. Elsisi and Masviba
helped the Trojans reclaim the lead with straight set wins at Nos.
1 and 2, respectively, before Stanic pulled the Jags to within one
at 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bares at No. 4.
Jag senior Klara
Jarova, playing in possibly her last match of her collegiate career,
dropped the first set 6-4 to Jones, but bounce back to dominate
the second set 6-1. Jones looked as if she were going to clinch
the match for the Trojans as she got up 3-0 in the final set. Jarova,
however, reeled of six unanswered points to take the match at No.
5 and tie the contest up at 3-3.
South Alabama's
rally attempt ended there though as Strauss captured a hard-fought
three-set win (6-7 (0-4), 7-6 (3-0), 6-3) at No. 3 to seal the deal
for Troy and give them the 4-3 match victory.
The Lady Jags
will now wait to see if they will earn an at-large bid to next month's
NCAA Tournament, marking their 11th consecutive trip.
