- The University of South Alabama women's tennis team
used a dominate performance to upset No. 59 Louisiana-Lafayette,
6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The victory was the fourth over a Sun Belt opponent this season.
"It's nice
to get a win against a Sun Belt Conference opponent with the tournament
just a few weeks away," said South Alabama women's tennis head
coach Jaco Keyser, "I'm happy for the girls to get a quality
win after a string of heartbreaking losses. This should give the
girls confidence that they are working on the right stuff and headed
in the right direction."
Like Saturday
against South Florida, the Lady Jags (11-7, 4-0 SBC) came out and
took the early momentum in the match when they swept the doubles
point. Maria Zivcicova and Sylvanie Spanenberg made quick work of
ULL's Clemence Remy and Kimmie Lyles with an 8-1 victory at the
No. 2 spot. USA completed the sweep with a pair of 8-5 victories
from the duos of Adrianna Solarova/Klara Jarova and Michaela Babicova/Dijana
Stanic at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions, respectively.
South Alabama
kept things going in the singles portion of the match and continued
its domination of the Ragin' Cajuns. Solarova continued her winning
ways, picking up her eighth straight singles victory with a dominate
6-1, 6-0 victory over Remy. USA also picked up three more straight
set victories from the Nos. 2, 5 and 6 positions, respectively.
Zivcicova and Babicova defeated Celine Van Weyland and Lyles each
6-3 and 6-1 at No. 2 and 5, respectively to clinch the match, while
Spaneberg was victorious over Marine Neveu, 6-3 and 6-4 at No. 5.
Stanic made
it 6-0 in favor of the Lady Jags when she battled back to take a
three set victory over Laura Marteli at the No. 4 position. The
Jag netter dropped the first set 6-4, but battle back to take the
second set 6-3 and the third set 1-0 after taking a 13-11 tie-break
marathon.
ULL (11-4, 0-2
SBC) prevented the Jag sweep when Chanell Meijer outlasted Jarova
in a tough three setter, winning 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (11-9) at the third
spot.
The South Alabama
women will close out their nine-match homestand when USA host in-state
foes Auburn (April 11 - 1 p.m.) and No. 36 Alabama (April 12 - 1
p.m.) at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
