PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The South Alabama women's golf team fired a 318 on the first day of the 2006 Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship and is currently tied for eighth place. North Texas and Florida International lead the event after each shot a team score of 303 on Monday at the PGA Golf Village.

"We had a rough start at 318 today, Jaguar head coach T.J. Jackson said. "We need to come out tomorrow and play how we know we can play and everyone is focused and in a good frame of mind after our practice session."

After North Texas and FIU, there is quite a logjam of teams fighting for the next seven spots with Arkansas-Little Rock sitting in third and Western Kentucky and the Jags tied for eighth, just eight strokes back.

FIU score the top two individual scores of the day on the par 72, 6,005-yard course. Rebecca Samuelson and Susan Nam lead the event after shooting 72 and 73, respectively. North Texas has two players tied for third after shooting a 74 and South Alabama's Sara Marti is tied for ninth after carding a 77 to open the tournament.

Jaguar Michelle Toth is tied for 13th after shooting a 78 to open the tournament. Elin Andersson is tied for 20th after firing a 79, while Alexis Beard is tied for 42nd after shooting an 84 and Susanne Jepson is 48th after firing a 90.

The field will play the second round tomorrow and complete the tournament on Wednesday with the winner receiving the Sun Belt Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
