MOBILE Ala. - The 75th-ranked South Alabama women's tennis team (7-5, 1-0 SBC) came up just short in its upset bid of 18th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth (17-0) Wednesday afternoon when the Jag women fell 4-3 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

"VCU is a great team and their record speaks for itself," said South Alabama women's tennis head coach Jaco Keyser. "If we can compete like we did today, as the season goes along, there's no doubt we will improve."

The Lady Rams came out and took the early momentum, picking up wins at all three doubles matches. VCU's Tatsiana Uvarova/Vera Petrashevitch defeated Slyvannie Spangenburg and Maria Zivicicova, 8-6 at the No. 2 position and the 18th-rated duo of Marianna Yuferova/Olga Borisova defeated USA's Adriana Solarova/Klara Jarova, 8-3 to clinch the point.

In singles action, Virginia Commonwealth increased its lead to 2-0 when Vera Petrashevitch won 6-2, 6-3, over Michaela Babicova at the No. 5 spot and set just one match point away from sealing the victory when No. 44 Marianna Yuferova won in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) over Krivacevic at No. 2. USA got on the board and cut the lead to 3-1 when Solarova defeated her first ranked opponent of the season, No. 107 Tatsiana Uvarova at the No. 1 position, 6-4, 6-4.

The Lady Rams sealed the match however when Borisova won at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 6-2) over Stanic. The Jags did capture the final two singles matches of the day, highlighted by Zivcicova's win over No. 125 Viktoria Konstantinova at the third spot. The doubles duo of Borisova and Yuferova are also ranked 18th in the nation.

South Alabama will continue its homestand Thursday when it takes on Indiana State in Mobile. The Sycamores enter play this week with a 6-0 record and faced Spring Hill on Monday and Troy on Tuesday.
