JAGS DROP THREE SPOTS ON FINAL DAY TO FINISH

MOBILE, Ala. -The University
of South Alabama men’s golf team struggled on the final day
of the 2006 USA Spring Golf Classic, posting a final round 307 to
finish in ninth place, at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile, Ala.
Tuesday.
Leading the
way for the Jags was sophomore Jonny Caldwell. Caldwell posted a
final round 74 in the tough, windy conditions. Freshman Kyle Simmons
was next at 76, Dan Swomley shot 79 and Daniel Burns and Dane Thorogood
shot 79 and 86 respectively.
“Today
we struggled a little bit,” said USA head golf coach Ben Hannan.
“On a day like today you really have to grind it out. Scores
of 72 to 75 can really go along way. We just have to keep getting
better.”
Ole Miss, the
day one leader, fired a 290 in the final round to take home team
honors. The Rebels three round total of 856 was tops with Southern
Miss taking second with 877. Middle Tennessee took third with 881,
Mississippi State was fourth at 883 and the University of Iowa rounded
out the top five with 888.
Individually,
Kyle Ellis of Ole Miss, carded a final round 71 to go along with
a 68 and a 73 on day one. Ellis’ total of six under-par 212
was four shots clear of teammates Jamie Howarth and Will Roubuck.
Noah Goldman of Mississippi State and Chas Narramore also finshed
tied for second. Caldwell was the top Jag finisher in a tie for
10th seven shots out of the lead.
Next up for
the Jags is the Borders Olympics Tournament hosted by the University
of Houston, March 17-18.
