MOBILE,
Ala. - The University of South Alabama men's golf team
will host the 2006 USA Spring Golf Classic Monday-Tuesday at the
Herron Lakes Country Club. The field will begin with an 8:30 a.m.
shotgun start on Monday with second round action scheduled to begin
immediately following the conclusion of the first. Final round action
is set for Tuesday.
The tournament
is open to the public and admission is free.
The 12-team
field includes Michigan, Southern Miss, South Florida, Mississippi
State, Mercer, Iowa, Eastern Michigan, Louisiana-Monroe, Ole Miss,
Middle Tennessee and Miami of Ohio. Individuals from nine of the
schools will compete as well.
"We have
a very good field for this tournament," said South Alabama
men's golf head coach Ben Hannan. "We have a very good mixture
of schools from the Big 10, the SEC and from various other conferences.
It will be a field of depth where everyone will have a chance to
win which is what we strive for, so we are really looking forward
to this week."
The tournament
will be the first in a month for the Jaguar men. USA last competed
at the UCF/Rio Pinar Intercollegiate held in Orlando, Fla., on Feb.
13 and 14. At the Central Florida Tournament, South Alabama finished
tied for eighth out of the 18 team field. Johnny Caldwell and Daniel
Burns led the way for the Jaguars individually, each finishing tied
for fifth.
"Herron
Lakes Country Club is a golf course that we are pretty familar with,"
said Hannan. "The course is in great shpe and we appreciate
Herron Lakes allowing us to host our tournament there. We've had
three weeks of solid practice and I feel we are ready to play. We're
young but we are getting better every tournament and we look to
continue that trend heading towards the conference tournament."
The Jags had
been scheduled to face Vanderbilt in a dual match on Feb. 25 at
Herron Lakes, but the match was cancelled due to rain.
After the USA
tournament, South Alabama wil head to Houston, Texas to compete
in the Borders Olympics tournment hosted by the University of Houston
on March 17-18.
