Ala. - The University of South Alabama men's tennis team,
ranked 63rd according to the latest ITA poll, continued its hot
start to the 2006 season by winning two matches at the Bruce David
Lubel Memorial Court on Friday. The Jaguars defeated North Florida,
5-1 and swept previously unbeaten Stetson, 7-0, to improve to 3-0
on the young year.
"We had two good wins over quality opponents today," Jaguar
head coach Scott Novak said. "This is a tough test having four
matches in two days, but all nine players got a chance to play and
contribute.
USA started the day with a scheduled 8:30 start against North Florida.
The start got pushed by to 9:30 because of heavy fog in the area.
Once the match started, USA showed no problems in picking up where
it left off last week, winning five of six singles matches. All
but the match at the number four position, which UNF won, were in
straight sets.
Due to time constraints from the fog, the teams began with singles
and did not play doubles. USA's Robert Hodel, playing at the number
five position, scored the first team point for the Jaguars, defeating
Elad Gabay, 6-2, 6-1. Next off the court was Jack Backer, playing
at the top position as he defeated Eduardo Pereira, 6-3, 6-2. At
number three, Marek Sramek took care of his UNF opponent, 6-2, 6-3
to put USA up 3-0.
Moments later, Filip Kricka won his match at number six to give
USA the victory, 6-4, 6-2. The coaches decided to play out the rest
of the singles portion as Monte Tucker defeated Matias Sigal, 7-6
(7-3), 6-3 to go up 5-0. UNF's Jose Terrera scored the lone point
for the Ospreys at the number four position as he posted a tough
three set win over R.J. Nagel, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0.
USA took a break while the Lady Jags battled North Florida. The
Jaguars took the court at 1:30 for a match with previously unbeaten
Stetson. USA's doubles tandem of Baker and Nagel made quick work
of Stetson's Joey Jones and Eddie Majcher, 8-4 at number two doubles.
Tucker and Dias Doskarayev didn't find it as easy as their teamates,
the number one Jaguar tandem posted a back-and-forth 9-8 victory
over Marcus Echtler and Sergei Boulanov. Tucker/Doskarayev battled
back down a pair of breaks early on to go up 8-7. The Hatter duo
equaled the score at eight, but the Jaguar duo dug deep and used
posted a 7-0 tiebreaker decision to get the doubles point.
Five of six singles matches were wins for USA in straight sets.
Tucker needed three sets to defeat Echtler, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6).
USA hosts Tennessee Tech at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and Troy at 1:30
before heading on the road for the first time this season.
"I was real proud of our new players especially Robert Hodel
and Monte Tucker," Novak said. "On Sunday we have another
doubleheader and will probably have to raise our level of play."
