Athens,
Ga. - The University of South Alabama
men's tennis team looks to build on last week's
performance in Tuscaloosa as they head to the Southern Intercollegiate
at the
Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the Campus of the University of Georgia
beginning
Friday morning.
South Alabama
along with 24 other teams will compete in the South's oldest fall
tennis tournament. The 38th annual Southern Intercollegiate, hosted
by Georgia,
will have three draws of singles and two draws of doubles. First
round matches
will begin at 8 a.m. Friday morning.
USA will play
its second tournament of the fall and will use this tournament to
gauge the upcoming spring season. There are eight SEC representatives
in this
week's tournament and the Jags hope to show well among the high
caliber
competition.
The singles
draws will be split up into Division I, II and III. The Division
I
draw has 51 players, including USA's Mark Gellard and Dias Doskarayev,
who both
played well in last week's Crimson Tide Fall Championships in Tuscaloosa.
Filip Kricka,
who advanced to the finals of his flight a week ago, will
participate in the Division II along with 58 other players, including
USA
sophomore Sam Huffman. Kricka looks to put together another exciting
run to the
final. Huffman also played well last week and advanced to the quarterfinals
of
his draw before being eliminated.
South Alabama doubles action will begin Friday afternoon as well.
In the
Division I doubles play, USA will send the team of Kricka and Doskarayev
into
action against the team of Radman and Johnson of Louisville. This
is the first
time that the two have played together in a doubles match. In Division
II, the
team of Huffman and Gellard will also see their first action together
as they
take on Gomez and Zarco of Tennessee Tech.
