SEVEN JAGS NAMED TO SUN BELT'S ALL-TIME CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
CONTACT: Dwayne Gatlin

New Orleans, LA. - To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Sun Belt Conference released its All-Time Cross Country Team, Thursday. Seven Jags were selected by the committee, including current runner Tonny Okello, the late David Kimani, Jeff Cambell, Bobby Abruscato, Deanne Dahmer, Laura Martin and Barbara Walker.

Last season, Okello won the Sun Belt Conference title, finished third at the South Regional Championships and placed 23rd at the NCAA Championships, becoming the third male Jaguar to earn All-American honors.

Kimani was named to the All-Time Team by virtue of his unmatched dominance in 1999. Kimani was undefeated on his way to becoming South Alabama's only NCAA cross country champion. Cambell, a two time conference champion (1991 & 1993) and USA's first NCAA qualifier, along with USA Hall of Fame runner Abruscato, were also named to the men's team.

On the women's side, 1987 Sun Belt Conference Champion Deanne Dahmer, 1997 conference champion, Laura Martin, and three time All-Conference runner, Barbara Walker, made the team. Dahmer led the 1988 team to a conference title, while Martin was the only Lady Jag to qualify for the NCAA Championship and Walker helped paced back to back team titles in 1992 and 1993.

Head Cross Country Coach Lee Evans said "This is a great accomplishment for the program, particularly Tonny being in his first year. That says a lot about where the program is going." Assistant Coach Ron Davis recruited and coached three of the women listed, Jana Bulirova, Michaela Mannova and Pavlina Vondrakova, and men's team selection Omar Smith, during his stint as head cross country/track and field coach at the University of New Orleans.
