JAGUARS DEFEAT MOBILE IN COACHES VS. KATRINA

On a very special night to help the victims of the recent hurricanes
throughout the gulf coast, the University of South Alabama, University
of Alabama, University of Mobile and Spring Hill College all came
together and raised over $77,000 for the Salvation Army to give
to hurricane victims. Just under 9,000 saw the college basketball
doubleheader at the Mitchell Center on Wednesday night.
“This was a very
special night for everyone involved,” Jaguar head coach John
Pelphrey said. “The outpouring of support, the effort that
a lot of people put into this event and the excitement of the arena
tonight will really help a lot of people out in the devastated areas
out.”
The Jaguars opened the
night with a 63-40 victory over NAIA foe Mobile. The Jaguars were
led by junior Carlos Smith with 16 points and was a perfect 10-for-10
from the charity stripe. Senior Mario Jointer chipped in 11 points.
Mobile was lead by a pair of players who each had 10 points as both
Robert Jones and Walter Fitzgerald were in double figures.
The Jaguars opened the
game with the first bucket on a dunk by junior newcomer Jason McGriff.
USA built as many as a seven-point lead through the first seven
minutes of the game. A pair of free throws by sophomore Demetric
Bennett gave USA an 11-4 lead with 13:14 to play in the half. The
Rams cut the deficit to one point with 8:18 remaining on jumper
by Fitzgerald, but the Jaguars built the lead back to eight, ending
the half with a 34-26 advantage.
In the opening half,
McGriff pulled down 10 boards, six on the offensive end to go along
with seven points. The Jaguars were eight-of-29 from the field for
27 percent and the Rams were 10-of-20 from the field, but struggled
from beyond the arc (one-of-six) and from the line (five-of-12).
USA was three-of-13 from 3-point land and 15-of-20 from the line.
USA started the second
half with a 9-0 run through the first five-plus minutes that changed
the complexion of the game. A layup by Jointer at the 14:33 mark
gave USA a 17-point cushion. USA extended the lead to 21 points
three times in the final 14 minutes. The Jaguars owned a 59-38 lead
with 1:41 to play and went on for a 63-40 finish.
For the game, USA was
16-of-48 from the field, five-of-21 from beyond the arc and 26-of-33
from the line. McGriff finished the game with 14 rebounds and seven
points.
The nightcap saw NAIA
Spring Hill College fall to No. 14 Alabama by a score of 85-64.
The Crimson Tide had five players in double figures with Ronald
Steele leading the way with 19. Alonzo Gee added 15 points, followed
by 13 from Richard Hendrix, both off the bench. Jemareo Davidson
added 12 and Chuck Davis chipped in 10. Davidson led the team with
nine rebounds.
Spring Hill had the lead
midway through the first half. A jumper by P.J. Crawford gave the
Badgers a 17-15 lead at the 9:27 mark. This is after the Tide jumped
out to a quick 8-0 lead to open the game in the first 1:27. After
a timeout by UA at 9:27, the Crimson Tide built a 10-point lead
to end the half, 35-25.
The second half saw UA build as many as a 26-point margin twice
with the latter coming at the 3:01 mark and ended 85-64.
Spring Hill had four
players in double figures led by 14 from Krisner Green. He was three-of-seven
from beyond the arc and five-of-seven from the line. Jeremy Price
and Noah Woolridge each added 12 points, followed by 10 from Barkley
Falkner.
USA and Spring Hill will
meet Friday, Nov. 18 at the Mitchell Center in USA’s regular
season opener at 7:05 p.m. This is the first time in seven years
that USA has opened the season at home.
