LAFAYETTE, La.- The South Alabama volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday afternoon at Earl K. Long Gym in Sun Belt Conference action.

In the opening game of the match, with the score tied at 16, Louisiana-Lafayette (4-11, 1-2 SBC) used a four-point spurt to stretch its lead out to 20-16. South Alabama (6-12, 05 SBC) kept clawing its way and eventually tied the game at 23-23 on a Cajun attack error. Neither team was able to really pull away from the other the remainder of game one, until with USA holding a one-point advantage at 32-31, ULL reeled off three unanswered points to take the 34-32 victory.

The Ragin' Cajuns kept the momentum in game two, jumping out to a quick 11-4 lead that was capped off by an Elina Salomakia kill. ULL stretched its lead out to 10 six points later and held that margin on three occasions. South Alabama tried to mount a rally and was able to get as close as five (28-23) on a Via Filipe service ace, but that was as close as the Jags got the rest of the way. With the 30-23 win, the Cajuns took a 2-0 match lead heading into the intermission. One telling stat was in the hitting percentage. Louisiana-Lafayette recorded a blistering .419 in the second contest compared to USA's .267.

Game three saw South Alabama come out of the intermission with an offensive spark. Holding a 7-6 lead over the Cajuns, the Jags pushed four straight points to expand the margin to five (11-6). South Alabama kept the lead at around that advantage for much of the remainder until at 20-13, ULL began to chip away at the Jag advantage. The Ragin' Cajuns took their firs lead of the game on a Jamara Saad service ace and three points later pushed the margin out to two at 26-24. UL-Lafayette went on to take the game and the match with a 30-26 victory.

USA was led offensively by Whitney Sanders and Via Filipe who finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Salomaki of ULL posted a match-high 17 kills.

South Alabama will next head to Miami, Fla., to take on Florida International at 6 p.m. (Central) on Oct. 14.
