SOUTH ALABAMA MEN’S GOLF IN TENTH AFTER
DAY ONE OF TUNICA NATIONAL INTERCOLLEGIATE

TUNICA, Miss. - The
University of South Alabama men’s golf team posted rounds
of 316 and 307 on day one of the Tunica National Intercollegiate
hosted by Ole Miss Monday, leaving it in a tie for tenth place overall.
Round one was
a struggle for the Jags, as they posted their highest team score
of the season placing them 12th of 15 teams. Freshman Daniel Burns
led the Jags by firing a one under-par 71, putting him in a tie
for second place after round one. Freshman Kyle Simmons carded a
78, sophomore Jonny Caldwell shot 82, junior Scott Shouldice finished
with 85 and freshman Dan Swomley totaled 86.
In the second round USA improved its team total
by nine shots by posting a 307, which was the fourth best second
round score. Simmons posted a team best 74 in round two. Burns and
Shouldice both shot 77, with Caldwell and Swomley shooting 79.
“The conditions
were brutal today,” said Jag coach Ben Hannan “We were
battling through 40-mile per hour gusts. It was one of those days
you just tried to survive.”
Heading into the final round, South Alabama sits
in a tie for tenth place overall. Southern Methodist leads the tournament
after posting rounds of 300 and 302 for a 602 total. UAB is in second
place with 606, Kent State is third at 611, Ole Miss is in fourth
at 613 and UNC-Greensboro rounds out the top five with 615.
Individually,
Logan Young of Mississippi State, competing as an individual, leads
after rounds of 67 and 76. Edward McGlasson of Colorado is one shot
behind at even-par 144. Michael Thompson of Tulane is third at 147.
USA’s Burns is in a tie for fourth with Kyle Ellis of Ole
Miss at 148.
