TROY,
Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s
soccer team extended its season-best winning streak to three games
with a 4-0 victory at Troy on Friday. The Jaguars improve to 7-4-1
overall and 5-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. Sophomore Jennifer Beckwith
paced the Jaguars with two goals.
“We played
very well defensively today and limited their chances,” Jaguar
head coach Mike Varga said. “It wasn’t our best played
game and I give Troy a lot of credit for that, they disrupted our
style of play. I also give a lot of credit to our team as we were
able to put four goals away.”
The four goals
by the Jaguars is the team’s largest output of the season
and the most since a 12-0 home victory over Louisiana Tech on Oct.
10, 2004. USA had scored two goals in five different games this
season, but could not get more than that until today.
The Jaguars
opened the game scoring the first goal, just 14 minutes into the
contest. It was the quickest goal by the Jaguars this season. Beckwith
fired one of her four shots past Troy goalkeeper Laura Longard with
sophomore Kelly Tarrant picking up the assist. USA held a 1-0 lead
at halftime. The Jaguars dominated the opening half in shots, holding
a 10-4 advantage at intermission.
In the second
half, Beckwith found the back of the net once again. This time,
Jaguar freshman goalkeeper Kelsie Langford punted the ball to Beckwith
and she dribbled and fired from about 20 yards out, putting USA
up 2-0 in the 58th minute.
Less than 10
minutes later, the Jaguars hit pay dirt again. Tarrant scored her
team-leading seventh goal of the season as she scored from about
15 yards out in the 65th minute. Tarrant tallied a game-high five
shots on the day. USA scored its final goal in the 88th minute on
a free kick as senior Allison Brubeck scored her first goal of the
season. It was the third set piece goal by the Jaguars this season.
For the game,
USA tallied 21 shots, 10 on goal. It was the fifth shutout of the
season for the Jaguars. Langford tallied three saves for the Jaguars
in 90 minutes.
USA will continue
its four-game road trip with a non-conference tilt on Sunday at
Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m. The Jaguars will conclude the 2005
Sun Belt Conference slate next weekend with games at Florida International
(Oct. 21) and Louisiana-Lafayette (Oct. 23), before returning home
to complete the regular season with a non-conference match against
Alabama State at 2 p.m. on Oct. 30. USA then will host the 2005
Sun Belt Conference Championship beginning Nov. 2.
