MOBILE,
Ala. – The
Denver Pioneers defeated South Alabama 3-0 to extend the Jags' losing
streak to four matches Saturday night at Jag Gym.
South
Alabama (6-11, 0-4 SBC) will head to Lafayette, La., to take on
Louisiana-Lafayette at 4 p.m. on Oct. 8.
"Right
now we just need to get more consistency," said South Alabama
head coach Nicole Keshock. "At times we have been able to compete
with every team in the conference and then other times we haven't.
We just need good solid play out of everybody. I think tonight was
a very important night for us, because Whitney (Sanders) and Via
(Filipe) were both a little off tonight and I saw the rest of our
hitters pick it up. That was nice to see and I was proud of that
fact."
In
game one, Denver (8-5, 2-0 SBC) came out and grabbed control from
the start. With the Pioneers holding a one point lead at 7-6, Denver’s
Holly Benson started a 14-5 run that pushed the visitor’s
lead out to 21-11. The Pioneer spurt was capped off by another Benson
kill. The Jags trailed by as many as 13 on two occasions, before
falling 30-19. Kerry Porter sealed the DU victory in the opener
with her eighth kill of the game.
The
second contest started out with the Lady Pioneers still in control.
Denver broke an early 5-5 tie and quickly grabbed five of the next
six points to take a 10-6 lead. With DU leading 16-9, South Alabama
began to mount a rally. Over the next 14 points, USA was able to
take 12 of them and grab its first lead of the game at 21-18. During
the run, Shannon VanAntwerp was the offensive weapon, recording
three kills and freshmen Katie Johnson and Colleen Downey each recorded
aces. Denver answered the Lady Jag run, quickly tying the game up
at 21-21. The two clubs kept the game close for much of the rest
of the way until with it tied at 30-30, the Pioneers recorded two
straight kills from Lisa Hunter and Amanda Mallard, respectively,
to take game two 32-20 and a 2-0 match lead into the intermission.
Game
three was another one that went down to the wire. South Alabama
came out hot early and took an 11-6 lead on a Via Filipe kill. The
Pioneers once again continued to battle and eventually knotted the
game at 23-23 after a Jaguar attack error. The two clubs battled
back and forth the rest of the way and with the game tied at 28-28,
the Pioneers took the final two points of the game to take the game
and the match. Kim Muller gave DU the 30-28 victory with her third
service ace of the match.
USA
was led offensively on the night by Whitney Sanders, Brittany Blackwelder
and VanAntwerp, who each finished with nine kills.
Denver
placed three players in double digit kills led by Amanda Mallard
(13). Following Mallard was Lisa Hunter with 11 and Muller with
10 kills.
