MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama women's basketball (16-18, 5-13 SBC) will face Alcorn (17-13, 14-4 SWAC) in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) at 3:00 p.m. CDT on Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Miss.
SERIES HISTORY:
The Jaguars are 7-4 against the Lady Braves, their last contest a 77-73 loss on Dec. 12, 2002, in Lorman, Miss.
SCOUTING THE JAGS:
- South Alabama travels to Lorman after falling to James Madison in the Sun Belt Championship Quarterfinals, 79-54. Before the Jaguars' deficit, they won four games across four days, the first #12 seed to do so in the SBC Tournament.
- Chrysta Narcisse was named to the Sun Belt's All-Tournament Team after averaging 41.6% from the field, 36.5% from beyond the arc and 78.9% at the charity stripe.
- The Jaguars boast the third-longest active streak in the nation in consecutive games with a made three-pointer, boasting 794. They are behind Chattanooga (841) and BYU (827).
- South Alabama has not made a postseason appearance since 2019, when the Jags defeated Lamar on the road before falling to Wyoming in the second round.
- Daniela Gonzalez is 38.41% from downtown, a feat that has earned her a spot on the State Farm College Slam Dunk & Three-Point Championships Watch List.
SCOUTING THE LADY BRAVES:
- Alcorn hosts the Jaguars after a 64-60 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the SWAC Quarterfinals on March 11.
- Nakia Cheatham has held a massive presence for the Lady Braves, leading the team with 13.17 points per game, 7.60 rebounds per game, 71 steals, 31 blocks and 936 minutes played.
- Alcorn boasts a notable win over Southern, who went on to win the SWAC Tournament and compete in the NCAA Tournament.
- The Lady Braves have not had a postseason appearance since 2005, when they took on Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament.
