MILWAUKEE | Iowa State used a balanced offensive attack as five players had five or more kills in its 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-15) win over South Alabama on Saturday at the Panther Invitational held at the Klotsche Center.
The Cyclones (4-0) were led offensively by Alea Goolsby's 13 kills, while Maya Duckworth had 10 kills on 14 attacks and didn't commit an error for a .714 hitting percentage. As a team, Iowa State held a .351 - .091 advantage in attack percentage.
Sarah Gooch led South Alabama (1-2) with eight kills, while
Dalayla Blackwell had six kills of her own.
Briana Wilson paced the Jags with 15 digs.
How It Happened
Set 1 – Iowa State 25, South Alabama 16
•
KEY MOMENT: South Alabama challenged an in call on Lillie Wachholz's kill, which if overturned, it would have cut it to a one, but video review confirmed the put away, spurring on a 7-1 Iowa State run over the next eight points
• Iowa State led wire-to-wire in the first set, and broke the set open with a run 15 points into the match
• Duckworth clinched the 25-16 victory for ISU with a kill
• The Cyclone trio of Tierney Jackson (4), Goolsby (4) and Duckworth (4) combined for 12 kills in the opening frame, while five players had two or more
• As a team, Iowa State posted 18 kills and a .412 attack percentage, while South was limited to a .121 hitting percentage
Set 2 – Iowa State 25, South Alabama 19

KEY MOMENT: With South leading by three (17-14), Goolsby recorded five-straight points for Iowa State to ignite a rally for the Cyclones
• South Alabama led by as much as three (10-7) early on in the second set after a kill by
Eva Dittmar and an Iowa State attack error
• The Jaguars led 17-14, but coming out of a time out, Goolsby slammed home a pair of kills for the Cyclones and then after a South Alabama time out, tied the set back up with her third-straight put away
• Three points later, Goolsby put Iowa State back on top (19-18) with two more kills
• Iowa State went on to close out the set on an 11-2 run and take the set, 25-19
• Goolsby led the Cyclones offensively in the second set with eight kills
• There were nine ties and four lead changes, the only set in the match to have lead changes
Set 3 – Iowa State 25, South Alabama 15

KEY MOMENT: The Jaguars cut the deficit to one (10-9), but Duckworth and Wachholz recorded back-to-back kills to help the Cyclones reclaim momentum and stretch their lead back out to four
• Leading 2-0 in the match, Iowa State pushed across the first four points of the third set to take control early
• South Alabama battled back and trimmed the ISU lead to one (10-9) after an ace by
Alexa Strandberg, but that was as close as the Jaguars got for the remainder of the match
• Wachholz and Duckworth then recorded two straight kills and a Jaguar attack error pushed the Cyclone lead back out to 13-9
• From there, Iowa State went on to control the rest of the match en route to the 25-15 victory
Post-Match Notes
• The meeting marked the first in the all-time series between the two programs
• The sweep by Iowa State improved the Cyclones streak of 15-straight sets won this season as they have not dropped a set in 2025
• With her 15 digs, Wilson (709) eclipsed the 700-dig mark for her career
• Dating back to last season, Wilson has posted 15 or more digs in 21 of her last 22 matches
• The 15 digs also marked the 32nd double-digit match of her career
• The eight kills in the second set by Goolsby are the most by an opposing player versus the Jaguars this season
