Box Score ROME, Ga.- The South Alabama Women's Tennis team's season came to a close in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament as they fell to James Madison in a 4-1 final Friday morning.
The Jaguars engaged in a tight battle with the Dukes in doubles. South got some momentum early as
Lara van der Merwe and
Manal Ennaciri defeated their opposition 6-3 in the #3 position.
Chems Doha Zeghlouli and
Kenza Elakili came up just short in delivering the Jaguars the doubles point as they fell to their opponents in a 7-5 defeat.
Delien Kleinhans helped the Jags even the score as singles began by defeating her opponent in a quick 6-2, 6-2 win. South battled with James Madison the rest of the way with several sets going to tie breakers. Despite the best efforts from South, the Jags would come up short in a 4-1 defeat.
"Tough end to a solid season", said head coach Dr. Jaco Keyser. "Once today's disappointment washes off, we will look back and recognize some good achievements this year. We tied for 3rd in a rock-solid tennis conference and were ranked in the top 50 for a couple of weeks. There is plenty from this year to take encouragement from, but more importantly, this was an extremely enjoyable experience.. We stayed true to our identity of being a hard-working, selfless and non-entitled team. I have no regrets with this group and am looking forward to getting back to the drawing board this summer to figure out ways to stay competitive in this changing collegiate landscape".
