MOBILE, Ala.- South Alabama pulled together a gritty 5-2 win against Depaul Wednesday afternoon in Mobile. The win improves South to 6-10 on the season and marks their second straight victory.
"What a battle" said head coach Nick Brochu. "Doubles was amazing, we had great energy and we are finally clicking and it is fun to watch. Going into singles, I thought we had a good start, we were winning on five courts and all of a sudden we got really quiet and Depaul came back. They won a lot of second sets and made this match all the way into the end. We need to do a better job of putting the match away when we can put it away. Great effort from both our captains today by giving us points, it was a back and forth match but what is important is we got the win".
South got off to a hot start in doubles as Braden Hanning and
Javier Montoya delivered a 6-4 victory to clinch the doubles point for the Jags.
Juan Accossatto and
Harold van Raemdonck got the Jaguars started by winning their doubles match, 6-3. Victor Frumholz and Adam Bouyacoub were also on pace to claim a doubles victory as they held a 5-2 advantage before their match went unfinished.
South Alabama engaged in several thrilling singles matches in which four out of six went to three sets. Bouyacoub started things off with a 6-4, 7-6 victory and was followed by
Javier Montoya who gave South a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win. Victor Frumholz then stepped up for the Jaguars and delivered the wining point as he battled for a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win.
Juan Accossatto added the finishing touches for the Jaguars as he took down his opponent in a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
