MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama Football sent its seniors out with a big-time victory, defeating Southern Miss 42-35 Saturday night at Hancock Whitney Stadium
The win moved the Jaguars to 4-7 on the season with a 3-4 record in Sun Belt Conference play. South also stayed perfect against Southern Miss, improving its record against the Golden Eagles to 6-0.
KEY MOMENTS
- Keenan Phillips opened the scoring at the end of the first quarter to give the Jags a 7-0 lead in the game. Phillips scored on a run from 13 yards out to put the first points on the board
- Kentrel Bullock found the end zone minutes into the second quarter to cap a 63-yard drive and put the Jaguars up two scores.
- After a trick-play touchdown pulled Southern Miss within one touchdown, the Jags responded when Bullock scored his second of three touchdowns on the night. Bullock found paydirt from 26 yards out to give USA a 21-7 lead going into the locker room at halftime.
- On the first play of the second half, safety Cole Blaylock intercepted a Golden Eagle pass and returned it to the half-yard line to set up a Bishop Davenport rushing touchdown.
- Davenport crossed the goal line again five minutes later on a seven-yard scramble to extend South's lead to 35-7 midway through the third quarter.
- Southern Miss scored back-to-back touchdowns to pull within 14, but Bullock created more separation by striking with a 64-yard touchdown to make it 42-21.
- The Golden Eagles scored the last-two touchdowns of the night to pull within a touchdown, but Christopher Wallace Jr. recovered the onside kick to allow the Jaguars to line up in victory formation and secure the win.
KEY STATS
- South Alabama out-possessed Southern Miss by nearly an entire quarter. The Jags had possession of the ball for 22:43 compared to just 37:17 for the Golden Eagles.
- The Jags rushed for 263 yards on the night while holding Southern Miss to just 41 yards on the ground.
- USA produced the only turnover of the night on Blaylock's interception, and finished with seven points off turnovers.
NOTABLE
- Bullock celebrated senior day with the first three-touchdown rushing game of his career. He had rushed for two touchdowns in a game five times on his career.
- Bullock's 64-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter was the longest rush of his career. It helped him set a new career high in rushing yards in a game at 187.
- Bullock's performance pushed him over the 1,000-yard mark on the season.
- Blaylock's interception to start the second half was the first of his career.
- Redshirt freshman quarterback Jared Hollins led the first touchdown drive of his career on South's first score of the game. Hollins went 3-for-3 through the air for 35 yards on the drive.
- Defensive linemen RJ Moss Jr. and Achilles Woods both recorded the first sacks of their respective careers.
