Late Runs Costly as Jaguars Fall at Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. | After splitting the opening two sets, Louisiana used a pair of late runs over the final two sets to defeat South Alabama, 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-15, 25-19) Friday night at Earl K. Long Gym.

Cambria Gaier led the Jaguars (12-8, 7-2 SBC) with 17 kills, while the freshman also hit .462 in the match and had four aces. Dalayla Blackwell also finished in double figures with 10 kills, four blocks and a .400 hitting percentage, while Sarah Gooch just missed double digits with nine kills. 

Anna Loberg recorded her 14th career double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs, while Briana Wilson also added 20 digs of her own. Both seniors reached career milestones in the match. Loberg (1,707) moved into 10th-place at South Alabama in the career category, passing Michelle Landa (1,701, 2002-04), while Wilson (1,002) surpassed the 1,000-dig mark for her Jaguar career.

Louisiana (12-7, 4-5 SBC) had three players record double figures, led by Cailin Demps' match-high 23 kills. Marlee Ervin (16) and Jazmine Gaston (11) also posted double digits, and all three Ragin' Cajuns hit .400 or better in the match as the home team finished with a .315 percentage as a team.

How It Happened 
Set 1 – Louisiana 25, South Alabama 18

•    KEY MOMENT: Leading by three (17-14), the Ragin' Cajuns broke things open with three unanswered points
•    South Alabama pulled within one (13-12) after a Cajun service error, but Demps posted one of her eight kills in the set on the next point and the Jags committed an attack error to give UL a three-point advantage 
•    Leading 17-14 later in the frame, Lindsey Henry ignited a 3-0 spurt for Louisiana with a kill and after an attack error, Henry and Demps teamed up for a block to give UL a 20-14 lead
•    The Ragin' Cajuns went on to take the set, 25-18 
•    Louisiana recorded 17 kills and no errors on 29 attacks for a blistering .586 hitting percentage, while South committed six errors
•    Gaier led South Alabama with five kills in the opening set

Set 2 – South Alabama 25, Louisiana 20
•    KEY MOMENT: Gaier sparked a run of seven unanswered points to open the second set as she recorded a kill and three aces during the 7-0 Jaguar run
•    UL cut deficit to four on two different occasions, but Gaier again led the charge as she recorded three-straight points for South and extended the Jag lead to 15-9 with her 10th kill of the night
•    Louisiana again narrowed the South Alabama lead to four, two points later, but Gooch and Blackwell each recorded a kill and after a UL attack error, the Jaguars again led by seven (18-11)
•    Gooch and Alexa Strandberg later teamed up for a block to give South its largest lead of the set (20-12)
•    Ervin kills four-straight kills to cut South's lead in half (20-16), but the Jaguars quickly regained momentum with three-straight points coming on kills by Gooch, Evan Dittmar and Loberg
•    After a Jaguar point was overturned by video review, Louisiana again pulled within four late after another ace by Miciotto, but Gaier sealed the 25-20 win with her 11th kill of the match

Set 3 – Louisiana 25, South Alabama 15
•    KEY MOMENT: Holding a 15-12 advantage, Louisiana used a 9-1 run midway through the set to pull away and grab a double-digit lead
•    UL grabbed the first four points of the set and jumped out to a 6-1 lead early on in the third set after a kill by Ervin
•    Leading by four (11-7), Louisiana pushed across four-straight points to extend its lead after kills by Ervin and Demps, and a South Alabama attack error
•    Trailing by eight, Gaier ignited a 5-0 Jaguar run to cut the Ragin' Cajun advantage to three (15-12)
•    But South Alabama committed a service error on the ensuing point and Demps then followed with back-to-back kills to begin a 9-1 Cajun run
•    After a kill by Blackwell, Gaston posted three kills over the next point to put Louisiana at set point (24-13)
•    Three points later, Gaston clinched the 25-15 win for UL
•    Demps and Gaston combined for seven of Louisiana's final 10 points in the set, and had 10 of the Ragin' Cajuns' 15 kills
•    South Alabama was held to its lowest attack percentage in the set (.081)
•    Wilson did lead the Jags with nine digs in the third set

Set 4 – Louisiana 25, South Alabama 19
•    KEY MOMENT: Trailing by three, the Ragin' Cajuns used a late 9-1 run to retake the lead and the momentum
•    South led 11-9 after a kill by Gaier, but Louisiana pushed across five of the next six points and took a 14-12 lead after a kill by Demps
•    The Jaguars answered right back with five unanswered points as Blackwell had a kill to tie the set up and later added a block with O'Gorman
•    Gaier then recorded her fourth aces of the night to give South a 17-14 advantage
•    Louisiana though quickly answered back with three-straight points to tie the set back up as Demps posted two more kills and Ervin had one as well
•    After a kill by Blackwell, Demps continued the UL run as she tied the set back up (18-18) and Chelsea Gilmore followed with a put away of her own to help Louisiana reclaim the lead 
•    Gilmore and Demps then posted a block assists, and Ervin and Demps followed with a kill each before a Jaguar attack error capped off the 9-1 run to give Louisiana a 23-18 lead
•    Demps later posted her 23rd kill of the night to give the Cajuns match point, and Gaston sealed the win with her 11th 
•    For the second time in the match, Demps recorded eight kills for UL in the set
•    As a team, Louisiana recorded 21 kills in the frame and posted a .366 hitting percentage

Post-Match Notes
•    The meeting marked the 62nd in the all-time series
•    The loss snapped a seven-match win streak in the series by South Alabama 
•    With her 37 assists in the match, Loberg (1,707) moved into 10th-place at South Alabama in the career category, passing Michelle Landa (1,701, 2002-04) 
•    Loberg is just seven assists shy of matching Christine Spikes (1,714, 1975-76) for ninth place entering Saturday's match
•    With her 20 digs, Wilson (1,002) surpassed the 1,000-dig mark for her Jaguar career
•    The 20-dig match marked the seventh of the season for Wilson and the 16th of her career
•    Blackwell has had seven or more kills in nine of her 15 matches this fall, posted eight or more points in 12 of her 15 matches, and had 11.5 or more points in each of her last five
•    Since returning for the Texas State series, Blackwell has had eight or more kills, twice in double figures, and also hit .353 or better in all five matches
•    Over her last five matches, Blackwell has recorded 40 total blocks (20 sets – 2.10 per set)
•    Gaier now leads the club with 34 sets of four or more kills and has done so in 20 of her 31 Sun Belt Conference sets played
•    Gaier has recorded 12 or more kills in 14 of her last 18, and recorded double figures 15 times
•    Gaier has led the Jaguar offense in each of her last five

•    Loberg 35 or more assists each of her last six matches and six of her last seven
•    O'Gorman has had seven or more digs in 15 of her 20 matches this fall
