BIRMINGHAM, Ala. |
Lillie Simons and
Evie Taylor both set career highs in kills as South Alabama rallied back from an early deficit and won its third straight match with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-13, 27-25, 25-19) victory over Samford Friday at the Alabama Showdown hosted by UAB at Bartow Arena.
Simons led all players with a career-best 16 kills, doubling her previous high in the category, while also adding four blocks and five digs for South Alabama (4-5). The middle hitter posted a .532 hitting percentage as she had her 16 kills on 26 attacks and committed just two errors.
Maradith O'Gorman also finished in double figures with 11 kills and a .320 hitting percentage, while Taylor came off the Jaguar bench to nine kills.
Abryanna Cannon and
Sarah Gooch ended the match with eight and seven kills, respectively.

Quotable – head coach Jesse Ortiz
- On his thoughts on South's play in the match: "I thought we were aggressive. We started off the match pretty strong, and got into a little bit of a lull. I was glad that we recognized that and started picking it up. Coming in, I felt Samford was really good at serving, so I liked that our serve-receive kept taking on the challenge and put Anna (Loberg) in some great positions. Our middles had a great match, and I thought that was big for us because we were able to gash the center. Yesterday, I said we were a work in progress, but I like the progress that we're making."
- On the play of the middle hitters: "Evie (Taylor) has been great at practice and Dalayla (Blackwell) has been doing great, so we have competition in there. Those two are earners and I feel comfortable with either one of them out there for us. Evie has just been tearing it up, so we wanted to make sure we got her into the match.
"That was Lillie's best match and it was pretty awesome watching her demand the ball and her ability to put it away. In our gym (during practice), Lillie gives us fits. Playing against a lefty-middle is just tough. Watching some of the slots she was able to swing it in tonight was pretty impressive. Thinking back how tough it was for her when she first got here, it's just amazing to see how she's progressed. I'm very proud of both of them."
