Jaguars travel to Marshall and App State for first conference road trip

MOBILE, Ala. – The Jaguars open the new year on the road, traveling to Marshall and App State for their first road trip of the conference slate. The Jags will face Marshall on Thursday at 5 p.m. before finishing the weekend with a 1 p.m. CT tip at App State.
 
South Alabama opened its conference slate with a 56-62 loss against Old Dominion. Three Jaguars finished in double figures in the loss and Rachel Leggett led the squad in scoring for the third time this season.
 
Marshall is coming off an 87-72 road win at Southern Miss, where four players finished in double figures. App State also opened its conference slate with a win, defeating Louisiana 69-56 in Lafayette. Three Mountaineers finished in double figures, and the squad was led by Chaé Harris, who netted a team-high 22 points, en route to being named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week.
 
This weekend, South Alabama is looking for its first conference road win since Jan, 13, 2022.

South Alabama Notes
  • South Alabama is looking to get its first program win against Marshall. South and the Herd will play for just the second time on Thursday, but South looks to even the series at 1-1.
  • This weekend, first year head coach Yolisha Jackson is looking for her first Sun Belt Conference win. As an assistant at South Alabama from 2013-20, Yolisha Jackson earned 53 wins with the squad.
  • For Thursday's contest, both The Jaguars and The Herd are led by a new coach, as the Jags are led by Yolisha Jackson and the Rattlers by Kim Caldwell. Thursday will be the sixth time this season a game will feature two new head coaches: Mobile, Central Michigan, New Orleans, Nicholls, Florida A&M, Marshall.
  • Junior guard Jordan Rosier is the only Jaguar to start all 13 games this season, playing an average of 28.0 minutes per game. That is second on the team behind Kelsey Thompson, who plays 28.2 minutes per game.
  • South Alabama has five Jags who are averaging 8+ points per game: Kelsey Thompson (11.7), Rachel Leggett (9.3), Michiyah Simmons (8.9), Jordan Rosier (8.8) and Zena Elias (8.4).
  • South has had five finish in double figures twice this season, and finished with four in double figures four times this season.
  • Six different Jaguars have led the team in scoring through 13 games, with Kelsey Thompson leading the team five times.
  • South returns 73.6% of its scoring from a year ago, including SBC Freshman of the Year Kelsey Thompson, who led the Jaguars with 10.7 points per game. South Alabama also returned its leading rebounder, Kiana Anderson, who averaged 5.8 rpg last season.
  • South returns 12 from last year's squad and added four newcomers. Tyrielle Williams and Janelle Jones return to the court after missing last season due to injury.

  • First year head coach Kim Caldwell got her first Sun Belt win on opening weekend.
  • Marshall ha had three 100+ point games this season.
  • The Herd are averaging 85.3 points per game.
  • Abby Beeman leads the squad with 17.3 ppg.

  • South Alabama is 0-1 all-time vs Marshall, with the lone meeting between the teams being a 63-61 OT win in favor of Marshall.   
App State Notes
  • App State is 7-5 on the season, with a conference win over Louisiana to open the season.
  • Two Mountaineers are averaging double figures – Faith Alston (17.8) and Emily Carver (15.5).
  • App State sophomore Chaé Harris earned her first career Sun Belt Player of Week honors following a 22-point performance vs Louisiana.
