Jags opens 2024 slate at home Thursday

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama opens the 2024 season at home on Thursday afternoon, hosting West Alabama at 1 p.m. at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

South Alabama is coming off an 18-6 2023 season, going 7-4 in conference play and a perfect 10-0 at home.

The Jaguars return six from last year's roster, including the 2023 Sun Belt Co-Newcomer of the Year, Elysia Pool, who went 13-3 a season ago, going 8-2 from number three and 3-0 from number four. She finished conference play 7-1 and finished the regular season on a five-match winning streak.

The Jaguars add three newcomers to the squad - freshman Manal Ennaciri, transfer Tianna Dixon, and Lara van der Merwe, who was on the squad in 2022 but not a season ago.

South Alabama played in three fall tournaments, traveling to the ITA Regionals in Baton Rouge, the Samford Round Robin in Birmingham and the Roberta Alison Fall Classic in Tuscaloosa.

In the opening weekend of fall tournament action, three doubles duos advanced to the round of 16, before all bowing out on day four of the tournament. The Jags also added seven singles wins that weekend.

In Birmingham, South posted 10 singles wins, while adding six doubles wins, led by the duo of Elysia Pool and Tereza Dejnozkova, who won all three of their matches.

South closed fall action in Tuscaloosa, where the Jaguars posted six singles wins and five doubles wins. Doubles action was led by the duo of Nikola Novotna and Lara van der Merwe, who went 3-0 in doubles matches.

West Alabama went 19-6 a season ago going 10-0 in conference action. The Jags and the Tigers have met five times, with South winning every matchup.

All home tennis matches will be at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts and admission is free.
