MADISON, Miss. | Hugo Thyr became just the seventh South Alabama golfer to earn low medalist honors at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, and the first since 2013, after he fired an 8-under (208) to help lead the Jags to Match Play beginning Thursday morning.

The freshman won the event by one stroke over Seth Taylor of Coastal Carolina after carding a final round 6-under (66), tying his season-best mark for a round. He was joined in the top by Jack Hearn in a tie for ninth place with an even-par (216) after firing a final round 3-under (69).

The last Jag to win low medalist honors came in 2013 when Lane Hulse won in a playoff. Thyr joins the likes of Jonny Caldwell (2008), Gareth Maybin (2004), Freddie Cortina (1998), Heath Slocum (1996), and T.J. Jackson (1987) as individual conference champions.

South Alabama will vie for its 11th conference championship (the most of any member school), and first since 2010, after advancing to Match Play on Thursday morning by finishing second to Georgia Southern through three rounds with a 2-under (862). The Jags will be joined by Georgia Southern (3-under), Troy (6-over), and Louisiana (6-over) in competing for the conference championship.

Will Skipp fired a 3-over (219) to finish inside the top 20 individually while Jordan Plunkett shot a 9-over (225) and Jacob LeCroy finished at 10-over (226) each finished in the top 45 to help lead the Jags to Match Play.
