Jags look to build off momentum of the fall heading in the 2023 spring season

South Alabama begins the season at home on February 13

South Alabama will look to build off its momentum of the fall season as the Jags gear up for the spring season that begins with a home tournament the second week of February.

The Jags finished the fall season with a second-place finish at the Tempest Collegiate in Texas (October 9-12) before winning their final tournament at The Clerico (October 24-25). Both Jack Hearn and Hugo Thyr led the Jags in those tournaments, recording top 10 finishes including a third-place finish by Thyr at the Tempest Collegiate.

"What that says for our program is that these guys are talented enough to win and compete at the highest level," South Alabama head coach Ben Hannan said. "We had a lot of different guys contribute in the fall which is a good sign. The guys worked hard in the offseason and hopefully that will lead to more consistent golf week in and week out as they stay focused and committed to getting better every day."

The Jags open the 2023 slate at home in the Hal Williams Collegiate presented by Hampton by Hilton – Providence Park beginning on February 13. The tournament will feature teams from all around the country including the likes of Arkansas, Davidson, Illinois, Kansas State, Kent State, Louisiana, Memphis, Oral Roberts, Seton Hall, Southern Miss, Texas State, Toledo, VCU, and Western Kentucky.

The tournament will be played at the Magnolia Grove Golf Club and will feature 54 holes of play.

"We are excited to be hosting the inaugural Hal Williams Collegiate," Hannan said. "Coach was such as special person and meant so much to many of us. He would come around the office or practice sometimes, so some of the current team knew him as well. It will be a special tournament this week, and it's always nice to play at home."

South Alabama will have a couple of weeks off before heading to Opelika (Ala.) for the Tiger Intercollegiate presented by Jason Dufner hosted by Auburn. The tournament will be played at the Grand National Golf Club from March 5 to March 7.

"The spring schedule plays closer to home mostly because of our location geographically," Hannan said. "We live in a warmer climate, so many teams travel down South to play. Fortunately, we don't have to travel very far to play to play against some of the best teams in the country. Also, the conference championship is played in Jackson (Miss.) this year, so staying on like grass and conditions will hopefully help us to prepare."

Following their trip to Auburn, the Jags travel to Lake Oconee (Ga.) for the Linger Longer Intercollegiate hosted by Mercer on March 19 (running through March 21). The field includes Alabama, Arkansas, Augusta, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, UNC-Greensboro, Kennesaw State, Mercer, South Florida, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Wofford. It will be played at the Great Waters Course – Reynolds Lake Oconee.

"We've got a very competitive schedule from the first tournament to our conference championship in late April," Hannan said. "We will some of the top programs in the country this spring and we'll get a good understanding of where we are on a national level."

The final two regular season events will be the Craft Farms Intercollegiate (March 26-March 28) in Gulf Shores (Ala.), followed by the Grandbear Matchplay hosted by Southern Miss in Saucier (Miss.) April 10 and 11.

The Craft Farms Intercollegiate will be hosted at the Craft Farms Golf Resort and will play host to Samford, Rice, Illinois State, Boston, Oral Roberts, Western Kentucky, Georgia State, Texas State, Lipscomb, Southern Indiana, and Tennessee Tech to name a few. Meanwhile, the Grand Bear Match Play will feature Southern Miss, Louisiana, and New Orleans.

The Jags close out the year with the Sun Belt Conference Championships April 24-27.
