FOLEY, Ala. -
Hannah Maddux led South Alabama (22-8, 12-4) with 25 kills in a 3-1 loss to Coastal Carolina (21-9, 14-2).
South Alabama first drew momentum in their favor with a 6-0 run to make the score 11-6. Maddux worked to make it happen with a block with
Niki Capizzi, then three kills. Coastal Carolina shortly responded with a 7-1 of their own that left them with a 20-17 lead. Maddux and Capizzi scored another block but the Chanticleers closed out the set before the Jaguars could make a comeback, 25-20.
The Jags found themselves behind early, 12-7, but they proceeded to flip the score on a blistering 13-3 run including back-to-back
Paige Lynn aces, five kills from Maddux and an ace of her own to make it 20-15. Maddux and
Lillie Simons came in clutch for the set-winning block as the Jags took set two, 25-21.
Early aces from
Briana Wilson and
Kailey Keeble gave the Jags fuel to keep up with the Coastal offense early, but a 10-2 Chanticleer run put South in a 19-14 rut. Action from
Abryanna Cannon, Capizzi, and Maddux were not enough to bring the Jaguars back into it as Coastal took set three, 25-19.
Set four saw a quick 10-3 Coastal lead, but a 5-1 run powered by kills from Maddux and Cannon that kept the Jags lurking. The Chanticleers again pulled away with points from errant Jaguar attacks, but Keeble stepped up with a block assist alongside Capizzi and a kill followed by a service ace from
Addison Hurst. Cannon slammed down two late kills for consolation as Coastal Carolina won their third set, 25-16.
Maddux led the team and set a season high 25 kills while also recording four blocks and a service ace. Cannon and Hurst both ended with eight kills, with Cannon recording two blocks and Hurst finishing with eight digs and a service ace. Keeble totaled 41 assists, 12 digs, two blocks, and a kill. Lynn recorded 19 digs, four assists, and two service aces.
