MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama could not overcome five turnovers as the Jaguars fell to Louisiana, 33-20, Saturday night at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
The loss dropped the Jags to 4-4 on the season with a 2-2 record in Sun Belt Conference play.
"Not a good night," said head coach
Kane Wommack. "When you turn it over a number of times, you get short fields. We shanked a punt and it put our defenses in some poor situations early. I thought our defense did not play well enough in their run game and did not capitalize on third downs, we had to get off the field on third downs. We gave up some really critical third downs, even some third and longs. Offensively, I thought we were able to get some things going in the throw game, they were loading some things in the box, but I thought we started to get some momentum there, but then you give up another explosive run. When you look at the game compared to some other losses, I think this team outplayed us, out physicaled us."
Despite the loss, there were several strong individual performances from various Jaguars. The receiving duo of
Jamaal Pritchett and
Caullin Lacy combined for 299 yards and two touchdowns on the night. Pritchett hauled in 11 receptions for 168 yards and two touchdowns. All three statistics were career highs for the sophomore receiver. Lacy caught seven passes for 131 yards, extending his streak of 100-yard receiving games to seven.
La'Damian Webb also provided South Alabama with 96 rushing yards and a touchdown, giving him a rushing score in seven-consecutive contests.
Quentin Wilfawn was all over the field for the Jaguars on defense, setting a career-high in tackles with 15. His 4.5 tackles for loss also tied the school record for tackles for loss in a single game.
Jaden Voisin,
James Miller and
Khalil Jacobs all pitched in eight tackles apiece.
After a scoreless first half, South showed signs of life by coming out of the locker room with back-to-back touchdown drives. The defense struggled to get off the field, though, and the offense surrendered three more turnovers as the Jaguars could only climb within six points before the Ragin' Cajuns pulled away.
