MOBILE, Ala. – After capturing the program's 19th Sun Belt Conference title last month, the University of South Alabama women's tennis program learned its postseason destination as the NCAA Championship's 64-team bracket was revealed on Monday evening.
The Jaguars (22-4, 10-1 SBC) earned the league's automatic bid after defeating UTA, 4-3 in the championship match, and will open up play against regional host and No. 16 national seed Florida (19-6, 10-3 SEC) on Saturday (May 7) at Linder Stadium at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis with first serve set for 1 p.m. (CT).
"This is a great opportunity to go against one of the most storied programs in women's tennis," South Alabama head coach Jaco Keyser said. "There is no doubt this will be an uphill battle, but I cannot think of a better starting point to embrace the mental challenges that the new look Sun Belt Conference will present next year. Being the heavy underdog should allow us to swing freely this weekend, but more importantly presents a challenge from a mental approach that will be much needed as we move into next year. I am super proud of this team and how they represent our university and look forward to this weekend."
The winner of the match will face the winner of Florida State-Florida International on Sunday (May 8) at noon (CT).
The Gators will host the first and second rounds, marking the 21st time that they have done so.
The appearance marks the 13th overall in the NCAA Championships and the first since 2019. South Alabama and the Gators have faced off in the postseason one other time with that meeting coming at the 1999 NCAA Championships in Gainesville, Fla.
Should South and Florida State meet up in the second round, it would mark the second postseason meeting with the two clubs facing each other at the 2019 tournament.
