Opening Tip
- The last two times South played Arkansas State were at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and both times the Jags defeated the Red Wolves to advance in post season play.
- South last defeated A-State at home, 87-71 – the most points the Jags have scored against the Red Wolves – on Feb. 20, 2020. It was the first of three matchups between the teams in that season.
- In the last 10 meetings Arkansas State leads 6-4.
- Jaylin Powell has recorded 20 or more points in back-to-back games, including a career-high 23 points in her last outing versus Louisiana on Saturday.
Last time with Arkansas State
-With the win, South has now won three-of the last four match-ups with the Red Wolves.
-It was the first time the Jags have beaten A-State in consecutive outings — they also won the previous year's match-up between the two in the opening round of the SBC Tournament — since 2012.
-After making 27-of-65 (41.5 percent) from the floor it was the first occasion that the Jaguars shot better than 40 percent since facing Troy on Feb. 13, 2021.
-USA grabbed 50-plus rebounds for the first time since its season-opening victory over Mobile on Nov. 25, 2021.
-It was also the first-time last season that South has had five individuals score in double figures.
-Antionette Lewis was credited with a double-double in back-to-back contests, the first time that has happened since the Jags' opening two outings of the season.
-Not only was Lewis credited with a career-best rebounding total, she recorded five assists before the end of the opening quarter on the way to career-high total in that category as well.
-In addition to scoring in double digits for the third game in a row, Devyn Lowe finished with five or more rebounds in each of those outings as well.
-It was the first time since scoring a career-best 21 points at Coastal Carolina on Feb. 6, 2021 that Jayla Morrow finished in double figures scoring.
-Janelle Jones — who had scored 10-plus points in three of South's last five games — finished the day with a career-high scoring total after making 4-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc.
-The freshman also posted a career high with six rebounds while playing just over a mile from her high school gym.
-It was the second contest in a row that Mahogany Vaught reached double digits in the scoring column, while it marked the third occasion in the last five outings she has posted five-plus assists.
Notes from Louisiana
- Louisiana extended its win streak over South to two.
- Throughout the duration of the game the score was tied nine times, the most of any game this season.
- The last time the Jags lost its first home conference game was in 2019 to Arkansas State.
- It was the second consecutive game and third occasion this season that Powell has scored 20 plus points.
- The graduate student also recorded the first double-double for the Jaguars since Zena Elias' on Nov. 9 against Mobile.
- Powell's six three-pointer field goals left her one shy of the school record, last tied by Jordan Rosier on Dec. 14 against Faulkner.
- Nadia Howard grabbed a career-high six boards as well as shot a career-best six free throws.
- Dee Haymer was once again perfect from the free-throw line, converting all three of her attempts at the stripe.
- Tyrielle Williams had a career-best three steals, the most of any player, in addition to tying Vaught for most assists among the squad with four.
