STARKVILLE, Miss. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Hail State Invitational at Newell-Grissom Building.
USA (7-4) defeated Jackson State in four sets Saturday morning before falling to host Mississippi State in four sets Saturday evening. The Jaguars will square off with Syracuse at 11 a.m. Sunday to close the Hail State Invitational and their non-conference schedule.
USA 3, JSU 1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-8)
GAME FACTS
Set 1
- The Jaguars cut their deficit to two at 13-11 on a Jackson State service error, but the Tigers then went on a 4-0 scoring run to take a 17-11 lead.
- USA tied the score 19-19 with a 5-0 run that featured three consecutive service aces by Kailey Keeble.
- JSU took a 22-19 lead with a 3-0 run on a pair of kills by Alexis Williams and Jaguar attack error.
- The Tigers earned set point at 24-21 on a USA service error, and clinched the set 25-21 on a kill by Williams to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2
- USA went on a 3-0 run that featured kills by Kailey Keeble and Carissa Bradford to take an 11-6 lead.
- The Jags scored three straight points on a kill by Maddux, a bad set by JSU and a kill by Kennedy Wallace to build a 19-14 lead.
- South Alabama closed the set with a 6-0 scoring run, highlighted by a solo block by Wallace and kills from Soboleski and Keeble. The Jags earned set point at 24-15 on a kill by Soboleski, and clinched the set 25-15 on a JSU attack error to tie the match 1-1.
Set 3
- JSU opened the set with a 5-0 scoring run, and took a 9-1 lead with a 4-0 run that included three straight kills from Olivia Flanagan, Alexis Williams and Marina Brito.
- Kills by Soboleski and Keeble, and a service ace from Paige Lynn highlighted a 6-0 Jaguar run that cut the Tiger lead to 9-7.
- The Jags tied the score with a 4-0 run that featured a kill by Niki Capizzi and three consecutive service aces from Soboleski.
- USA tied the score 12-12 on a JSU service error, and took its first lead of the set at 13-12 on a block-assist by Wallace and Bradford.
- The Jaguar lead was extended to 16-13 on three straight JSU errors – one service error and a pair of attack errors. A kill by Maddux, consecutive kills by Wallace and a kill by Bradford highlighted the 8-0 USA run that pushed the Jaguar advantage to 22-13.
- USA earned set point at 24-16 on a kill by Soboleski, and clinched the set 25-16 on a JSU attack error to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set 4
- Kills by Soboleski, Capizzi and Keeble, and a service ace from Paige Lynn highlighted a 7-0 Jaguar run that gave South Alabama an 8-1 lead.
- The Jags extended their lead to 12-2 with a 4-0 run that featured kills by Capizzi and Bradford, and a service ace from Soboleski.
- A 4-0 Jaguar run that included kills by Bradford and Wallace, and a service ace from Keeble extended the USA advantage to 17-5.
- South Alabama pushed its lead to 20-6 with a 3-0 run that featured kills by Keeble and Wallace, and a block-assist by Wallace and Maddux.
- USA used a 4-0 run to earn match point at 24-7 after consecutive kills by Maddux and a kill by Soboleski. The Jags clinched the set 25-8 on a kill by Capizzi for a 3-1 win.
NOTES
- Keeble recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 28 assists and 14 digs, along with five kills, five service aces and two blocks.
- Maddux finished with a game-high 12 kills, .286 hitting percentage, one dig and two blocks.
- Rachel Hickey recorded a game-high 17 digs, and also added seven assists and one kill.
- USA finished with 12 service aces in four sets.

Set 1
- MSU took an 11-9 lead on a service ace by Gabby Coulter, but the Jags used a 3-0 run that featured a pair of kills by Maddux and block-assist from Maddux and Capizzi to take a 12-11 lead.
- A kill by Wallace tied the score 18-18 before the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to close the set, earning set point at 24-18 on a kill by Lauren Myrick and clinching the set 25-18 on a block-assist by Gabby Waden and Deia Robinson.
Set 2
- MSU took a 9-8 lead on a kill by Myrick, but South Alabama answered with a 3-0 run, highlighted by a block-assist from Maddux and Wallace, to take an 11-9 lead.
- Consecutive kills from Soboleski pushed the Jag advantage to 13-10.
- MSU cut its deficit to one point before USA went on a 5-0 run that featured kills by Capizzi and Bradford, and block-assist from Capizzi and Bradford to take a 19-13 lead.
- USA earned set point at 24-17 on a kill by Wallace, and clinched the set 25-17 on a block-assist by Wallace and Maddux to even the match at one set apiece.
Set 3
- The Bulldogs doubled their lead to 12-6 with a 4-0 run that was aided by a pair of Jaguar attack errors.
- MSU later used a 7-0 run to build a 20-8 advantage.
- USA cut the MSU lead to 23-12 with a 3-0 run that included a service ace by Soboleski.
- The Bulldogs earned set point at 24-12 on a kill by Avery Fitzgerald, and clinched the set 25-13 on a kill by Jessica Kemp.
Set 4
- South Alabama took a 12-11 lead with a 3-0 run that was highlighted by a kill from Maddux.
- A kill by Myrick gave MSU a 16-15 lead, but a kill by Capizzi and Bulldog attack error gave the Jags a 17-16 lead.
- A kill by Myrick later in the set gave Mississippi State a 23-22 lead, but a kill by Bradford tied the score 23-23.
- MSU earned set point at 24-23 on a kill by Myrick, and clinched the set 25-23 on a bad set to clinch the match.
NOTES
- Keeble recorded her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 34 assist and 10 digs, along with two kills, two service aces and one block.
- Bradford led the Jags with 11 kills, along with a .278 hitting percentage, three digs and three blocks.
- Capizzi added nine kills, four digs and four blocks.
- Hickey finished with a team-high 15 digs, and also recorded three assists.
- USA finished with nine total team blocks, while the Bulldogs finished with seven.
