All-Time Series
South Alabama owns a 13-0 all-time lead over Florida A&M in a series that dates back to Oct. 18, 1984. The Jags defeated the Rattlers in four sets in 2016 in Mobile in the last meeting between the schools. The all-time series between USA and Charleston Southern is tied 2-2. The Buccaneers have won the last two meetings in the series, including a five-set win in a 2010 tournament in Statesboro, Ga. Jacksonville holds a 14-13-1 all-time lead over South Alabama in a series that began in 1978. USA defeated JU in straight sets in a 2012 tournament in Statesboro, Ga., which marked the last meeting between the schools.
Jag Notes
• Maddie Soboleski ranked tied for fourth in the Sun Belt Conference in service aces per set (0.34) last season, and seventh in assists per set (8.03). In conference matches, she ranked eighth in the SBC in assists per set (7.93).
• Rachel Hickey ranked seventh in the Sun Belt Conference in digs per set (4.43) in 2020, and ranked 10th in the league in digs per set (4.18) in conference contests.
• Soboleski led the Jags with nine double-doubles last year, including a stretch of six straight from Oct. 22-Nov. 5.
• The Jags return seven letterwinners from last season, including Hannah Maddux who led the team in kills (219) and kills per set (2.70).
• The Jags ranked third in the league in service aces per set (1.43) in 2020. In conference matches last year, the Jags ranked third in service aces per set (1.44) and 11th in assists per set (9.42).
• USA ranked sixth in the SBC in hitting percentage (.176) in 2020, and seventh in hitting percentage (.180) in league matches.
• In Sun Belt Conference matches in 2020, USA ranked tied for third in opponent hitting percentage (.157).
• The weekend tournament marks the start of the Jesse Ortiz era at South Alabama. Ortiz was announced as the program's new head coach in March 2020.
• The 2021 South Alabama roster features six transfers, including four from Tennessee: Kailey Keeble, Carissa Bradford, Madisen Werdell and Niki Capizzi. Kennedy Wallace joins the roster after spending four years at Northern Illinois, and Alayna Maslinski spent the previous two seasons at Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University after playing the first two years of her career at Wichita State.
