GOTHENBURG, Sweden – A birdie on the 72nd hole on Sunday capped a final-round 8-under-par 64 and helped give former University of South Alabama men's golfer Jonny Caldwell his first victory on the European Tour as he claimed the Scandinavian Mixed Hosted by Henrik & Annika.
After beginning the last day three shots off the lead, Caldwell earned the title by a one-stroke margin over Adrian Otaegui with a 17-under-par 271 total.
He finished all four rounds of the tournament at the Vallda Golf and Country Club below par, posting a 70 on the first and third days of play while shooting a 5-under-par 67 in between.  In the final round, Caldwell recorded four birdies on the front side of the course to make the turn at 4 under, and he followed with birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 as well.  After driving the green and sinking a 40-foot putt for an eagle at the par-four 14th hole, he birdied Nos. 16 and 18 — hitting an iron to three feet at the last — for a 32 on the back nine also.
Both Sunday's 18-hole score and his four-round total were the best of the season thus far for Caldwell.
The victory moved the Northern Ireland resident into 43rd place on the European Tour's Race to Dubai standings. Â It was the third time in his last four outings that Caldwell has made the cut.
