Opening Tip
• The Jags will play five of eight games on the road the final month of the regular season beginning with two contests at Coastal Carolina this weekend.
• It's the first time since the start of Sun Belt Conference action that the Jaguars won't play a Friday game after going 5-0 on the day last month.
• South has won the first outing and dropped the second in each of its first two Sun Belt road trips.
• USA last won back-to-back league road games at Georgia State and Georgia Southern on Jan. 16 and 18 a year ago.
• Jaguar head coach Terry Fowler will not be on the bench this weekend while tending to family matters, associate head coach Dan Presel will be in charge of the team in his absence.
Coastal Carolina Series Notes
• The two teams have traded back-to-back wins over the last six meetings, but neither has ever won three contests in a row since the first match-up in the series in 1995.
• All but one of the games have come in Sun Belt action after the Chanticleers joined the league prior to the start of the 2016-17 campaign.
• The Jaguars' lone victory in Conway was an 88-78 decision — the highest point total each program has produced in the series — on Jan. 5, 2019.
• Three of the last four meetings between the two teams have been decided by a single-figure margin after the previous three were claimed by 10 or more points.
• Coastal's 52 points in the second game in Mobile last month were the fewest the Chants have scored against the Jaguars.
Board Work
Antoinette Lewis grabbed the 1,000th rebound of her career in the opening quarter last time out against Georgia State, becoming just the third individual at South and 13th ever in the Sun Belt to surpass the milestone, and after adding six blocks in the two contests with the Panthers she also moved into a tie for eighth place on the conference's all-time list in the category with Basketball Hall of Fame member Anne Donovan (Old Dominion, 1982-83). The senior forward/center added 11 points on Saturday to record her first double-double since a Jan. 8 defeat of the Chanticleers, although she has recorded 10-plus boards in five of the last six outings.
Vaught Paces USA In Game 2 With Panthers
Guard Mahogany Vaught scored a game-high 12 points in Saturday's victory over the Panthers, the 10th time this season that she has scored 10-plus points. It was the fourth occasion this winter that the junior has led the team in the category, with the Jaguars going 4-0 in those contests.
Mallard Continues To Contribute
Sophomore Jaylen Mallard chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds last time out, marking the first time she has scored in double figures since posting a career-best 15 at Appalachian State on Jan. 15; that included making a career-high 3-of-4 attempts from three-point range. In addition to averaging 7.5 rebounds per game in the two match-ups with GSU, the forward has connected on six shots from beyond the arc in the last three outings after making just two threes in the previous nine games combined.
Lewis Among The All-Time Leaders
In just three-plus seasons, Lewis ranks among the top five all-time in two statistical categories in USA's record book with a 53.4 field-goal percentage (second) and 207 blocks (third), while standing among the top 10 with 1,446 points (seventh), 1,007 rebounds (third) and 580 field goals (sixth). Following a pair of 10-rebounds games against Georgia State the final weekend of January, Lewis became just the third individual in program history — Adrian Vickers and Orphie Moore, both member's of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame, are the others — to surpass 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 100 blocked shots in a career.
Additional Notes From The Georgia State Games
• No GSU individual scored 10 points in the win on Saturday, the second time this season that the Jaguars have not allowed an opposing player to score in double figures after also accomplished the feat on Dec. 8 in a win over William Carey.
• South's turnover total in the second contest was its lowest of the year thus far, and the first occasion the Jags were charged with fewer than 10 since defeating ULM on Feb. 8 a year ago.
• Saturday marked the sixth time in 2020-21 that the Jaguars have held the opposition at or below 25 percent from beyond the three-point line.
• Savannah Jones has now grabbed 10 or more rebounds three times this year after reaching double figures in the category in USA's win in the second game.
• Jayla Morrow posted her sixth game this season with 10 or more points after recording 12 against the Panthers on Friday, the same number of double-figure contests that she recorded in 81 appearances the last three years combined.
Notes From The Last Coastal Carolina Meeting
• Trailing by eight with four minutes remaining in the contest, the Jaguars scored the final 11 points of the afternoon.
• The Jags' 22 first-half points were the fewest they had posted this year until Thursday's game against Georgia State last week.
• South also recorded its lowest field-goal percentage of the season at the time in the contest.
• After leading all players in scoring and blocks — highlighted by a rejection of a three-point attempt to tie the game at the buzzer — Lewis was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week the following Monday.
• It was the sixth time in a seven-outing stretch that Vaught finished with two or more steals.
