Opening Tip
• South concludes the regular season with two games against the Panthers in Atlanta.
• This will mark the first time since 2011-12 that the Jaguars will wrap up their regular-season schedule in February.
• It's also the third occasion in the last four years that the Jags will end the regular season on the road.
• A victory in one contest this weekend would give USA a double-digit win total in Sun Belt Conference play for the third time in the last six years, while a weekend sweep would result in the Jaguars matching the school record for league wins in a season.
• Should the Jaguars claim at least one of the two match-ups it would mark just the second time in the last 13 years that they would finish above .500 on the road in Sun Belt action; they were 5-4 away from home in the conference during the 2017-18 campaign.
Georgia State Series Notes
• GSU's win in the first of two meetings at the Mitchell Center the final weekend last month snapped South's six-game series win streak, the longest put together by either program.
• That 47-41 victory for the Panthers was the lowest-scoring game in 19 all-time match-ups between the programs.
• The Jags have won 10 of 15 contests in the series since the Panthers joined the Sun Belt for the 2013-14 season.
• That includes USA winning each of the last five meetings in Atlanta including an 81-64 victory on Jan. 16 a year ago in the only match-up between the teams in 2019-20.
• The Panther's most recent win at home against South was a 69-54 decision on Feb. 19, 2015.
High Five
Senior forward/center Antoinette Lewis averaged 16 points and 9.5 rebounds per outing while blocking five shots in USA's two games against Appalachian State to move into the top five on a pair of record lists last weekend. After matching a season high with 23 points in a five-point victory on Friday night, she became just the fifth individual in program history to surpass 1,500 points in a career — Lewis ended the weekend fourth in the category after adding nine points the following afternoon — while with four blocks Saturday she entered the top five on the Sun Belt's all-time list. Lewis also recorded her 50th career outing with 10 or more rebounds in the second match-up after finishing with a game-high 11, the 10th occasion this year that she has paced all players on the boards.
Doubling Up
After leading all players with 19 points and adding 10 rebounds in Saturday's contest against the Mountaineers, Savannah Jones posted her third double-double in the last five games while it was the fourth time during that span that she has paced the Jaguars in scoring; despite missing nine games due to injury early in the season, her six occasions topping South in points are tied for the most on the squad. The redshirt senior — who climbed into the seventh spot on the school's all-time scoring list on Saturday — is averaging 13.4 points and 9.4 rebounds per outing over the last five contests, sharing the team lead as well with nine steals during that stretch.
Sophomore Surging
Forward Jaylen Mallard had scored 10-plus points three times in the first two-and-a-half months of the season, but she has now turned the trick in four straight games after achieving the feat in both contests against App State. After recording a career high with 18 points in the Jaguars' win on Friday — she also tied for team-high honors with eight rebounds that night — the sophomore added 12 points and five boards the next day, giving her averages of 13.3 points and eight rebounds over the last two weeks.
Additional Notes From The Appalachian State Games
• Saturday marked the eighth time this year that the opposition has connected on 25 percent or less from long distance against the Jaguars.
• It was just the second occasion this season that South has lost when surrendering less than 60 points.
• When Lewis scored the 1,500th point of her career in Friday's contest she became the first Jaguar to surpass the milestone since Adrian Vickers — the school's all-time leading scorer — did so in 1989.
• It was the first time she led the team in scoring since sharing game-high honors in a Jan. 9 victory over Coastal Carolina, while it marked the first occasion she recorded 20-plus points since finishing with 23 in a defeat of Nicholls on Dec. 5.
• Mahogany Vaught led the Jags in assists in both games over the weekend, and has now accomplished the feat in five of the last six outings while averaging 4.17 per outing this month.
Notes From The Last Georgia State Meetings
• In the first game, the Jaguars recorded season-low totals in first-half and total points as well as field goals.
• GSU's 46 points in the second match-up are the fewest South has allowed against an NCAA Division I opponent this year.
• Not only was the Jags' turnover total in the second contest their lowest of the season, it's the only time during the 2020-21 campaign that USA has recorded a single-digit figure in the category.
• Lewis grabbed the 1,000th rebound of her career in the second of the two games.
• In the second game on Friday, Jones recorded her third outing with 10 or more rebounds after turning the trick twice in 102 career appearances entering the season.
